A U visa is a form of relief available to individuals who have been victims of serious crimes in the United States (or crimes that violate the laws of the United States if outside of the United States), such as rape, torture, trafficking, incest, domestic violence, sexual assault, involuntary servitude, kidnapping, abduction, false imprisonment, extortion, perjury, and other offenses.
As with the T visa, derivative status is available to the children, spouse, and, in some cases, the parent of a U visa holder. The visa is granted for up to four years, after which the individual may apply for permanent residency.
